ABOUT OUR CENTRE

founder and owner Bertus Beukes

Garden Route Birds of Prey was founded in 2018 by Bertus and Lizette Beukes.

Located at the base of the picturesque Outeniqua mountains in George, Western Cape, our center resides within the botanical gardens—a place where our profound passion for the welfare of birds of prey conservation blossomed into fruition.

At Garden Route Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Centre, our primary focus is on rehabilitating birds of prey to be released back into their natural habitats. Recognizing the limited resources available in standard veterinary clinics for prolonged care, we established a dedicated facility to cater specifically to the needs of Birds of Prey in the Garden Route region.

For those birds that cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries or trauma, we provide long-term care and utilize them in educational programs during centre tours and community outreach initiatives at local schools and institutions. Our mission extends beyond rehabilitation; we are committed to fostering community awareness about Birds of Prey and promoting their conservation.

Through educational outreach, we aim to instill a deeper understanding of the human-wildlife conflict and inspire future generations to champion environmental stewardship. We believe in leaving a positive impact and rely on the support and collaboration of the public to achieve our goals.

At Garden Route Birds of Prey, our mission is to ensure the well-being and recovery of birds of prey through dedicated care and community involvement. We engage the younger generation by offering volunteer opportunities that teach them about the diverse species of birds of prey and the specialized care they require.

Each bird we rescue has unique needs, and we are committed to providing the best possible care to maximize their chances of recovery. Some birds may need extended periods to heal before they can be released back into the wild. Unfortunately, some birds, due to severe injuries, cannot survive in the wild and become permanent members of our family at GRBOP, where they continue to receive lifelong care.

Through our programs, many volunteers have gained invaluable skills and knowledge, fostering a deep appreciation for wildlife and empowering them to positively impact their communities and the environment.

Our second-generation founders, Kaitlin and Gian.

Their unwavering dedication to our feathered friends is nothing short of remarkable. From Kaitlin's tender care and being around raptors since the age of 6 years old, to Gian's nurturing spirit discovered through volunteer work, their paths converged in a beautiful love story that now intertwines with our mission.

Kaitlin's infectious enthusiasm and genuine bond with our raptors illuminate every corner of our center, while Gian's gentle soul brings comfort and compassion to all creatures big and small. Together, they stand as a testament to the power of love and shared purpose.

Knowing that they carry forward not just the legacy of Kaitlin's father Bertus Beukes, but also the hopes and dreams of our entire community.
